"Great Interface and Sound (Surround Too)" 2010-09-03
By Erik J. Malvick (Davis, CA)
I purchased this device after seeing my wife's uncle having the same product and to replace the marginally functional Nextel MP101. This product is 1000 times better.

The best feature of the device is the remote control type interface. You plug in the box somewhere near your stereo, which receives audio from your network and feeds it to your stereo, while the remote is where you actually see what you are doing. The screen on the remote is fantastic, and the box does nothing visible other than indicate whether it is on or off and how well the network is working.

All the power is in the controller and software driving your server. The controller is fantastic. It works off of its own wireless connection (the controller and box each have their own IP address on your network), so you can operate it and control it anywhere you have access to your wi-fi network. The controller can even be used to control another duet box or other squeezebox devices that are on the same network in the case you have a different setup in different rooms.

The software on the device is fantastic with a fairly thorough menu system by default, but almost unlimited flexibility due to the plugin architecture available. It is also nice that you can utilize the internet as a server, which is great when the computer is off but you still want to listen to internet radio. I also love the fact that almost any radio station with a feed can be programmed in and played.

The interface with your own library is pretty good. You can stream FLAC's, MP3's and more through the device although I found that the main box can be a bit flaky if counting on the wireless. My router is close to the device, so I went ahead and wired it to the router. The beauty of the device is that you can queue up music and reorganize the current playlist as you listen. It makes for a great party jukebox type device, and I find it fantastic after having the Netgear device, which had none of that type of functionality.

The best feature I love is that the Squeezebox Duet can play surround sound provided you set things up right: optical connection to a Dolby capable receiver, file format (flac or wave that is digitally packaged as 2ch-stereo), and of course the audio is surround to begin with. Fortunately, the squeezebox forums are fantastic for help, finding plugins, etc.

The biggest flaw I've found with the device and setup is that the firmware and server are not very stable. While Logitech seems to update the firmware quite often, it always seems like some new instability it introduced. The other big problem I have is when the controller loses its wi-fi connection. It rarely seems to recover even though the network is available (by looking at the signal icon on the screen). Last, the battery in the remote has a short life. It is usually on the order of 2 hours at best and less than an hour at worst (depending on how often the screen is being used). This can be difficult when there is a party or the device is left off the charger for extended periods of time.

While I know squeezebox has newer devices, I still love the portability the controller provides with respect to the sound and the sleek and limited profile that keeps the media-center from being too crowded looking. Judging that becomes more of a matter of preference and intended use.

"Squeezebox Duet - Science experiment?" 2010-08-15
By lenox
The Squeezebox Duet holds great promise, but at this point it is a science experiment. I have had XM Satellite radio for several years, and thought SB will be a wonderful step forward (XM programming leave much to be desired). I purchased my first Duet from Amazon about 45 days ago. The system would not install. Logitech customer support determined that the firmware was obsolete. A long and time consuming process led to replacing the unit. Except that the new unit had the same problem. This time Logitech tech support was able to upgrade the firmware on the handheld (took hours on the phone), but then it turns out that the firmware of the receiver is obsolete, and there is no way to upgrade it. I don't want to sound too harsh, because I think that the concept is wonderful. But with 2 sequential complete and utter failures, I think that Logitech needs to take of the Duet off the market, until they can turn it to a product.

"Enhance your entire home music system" 2010-08-07
By J. Lick (Albany, NY)
I am so pleased with this system, which I bought about 6-8 months ago. I had a few snags trying to integrate it into my complex home theater system, but one call to customer support and they patiently walked me through my problems. In fact, slightly more detailed directions might have gotten me there, but I was impatient. Now I can play my iTunes music, Pandora radio, and other music services throughout the house with ease. I usually prefer to control the music right from my computer, but it's nice to have the remote control. And I've added iPeng to my iPhone, and that makes a great remote control too. Finally, I decided to add a Boom to an upstairs office that had no access to the main music system. The Boom practically added itself to the system over the house WiFi. My only complaint about the Boom is that it is a little confusing to operate. Again, much easier with the computer server - - but that's in a different room. Playlists are really helpful to select music to play. In any case, I am so happy with this system that I just decided I should post a review to help any undecided shoppers.

"should be recalled before problems are fixed" 2010-07-31
By santaclau
In February i received my first squeezebox duet hooked everything up according to instructions, well it would not connect to wireless network and did not connect hard wired, after talking to customer service for 2 hours we were told to contact delink customer service to open certain ports, after 1-2houers with delink customer service still no open ports and no connection for the squeezebox. Well, i told my girlfriend lets just try it tomorrow, tomorrow came and the squeezebox was magically connected. now I have to say , when it works it really is awesome, the sound is great the features of the remote are awesome ,I am a huge fan of rhapsody. With rhapsody and the squeezebox you really have the world of music in your hand. BUT ! Remember I said it is awesome when it works! And here is the real problem of the squeezebox I can't remember how many times it disconnected , just by itself whenever the internet goes out or the power is off .I don't know how many hours I spent talking to customer service and on the logitech forum.Well logitech finally agreed to exchange it ,I told customer service that I was skeptical if the new one would work properly and I asked customer service if the problem might be with the dlink router and they said that indeed they had problems with that route rand I was told that the linksys router would work allot better with the squeezeboxSo I bought a linksis E3000 router.Set up the new router and then the brand new squeezebox, it connected with no problems, great. An hour or two later problems started disconnecting, a few times I was able to connect it again until next day it was finally out. after about 2 hours with customer service the told me certain ports on the router needed to be open and to contact liksys, I told the customer service guy the numbers of the ports and said thank you but no than kyou. they agreed to return it for a refund which will take 4-6 weeks.I haven't found out yet how this is going to work since i bought it on amazon.com but I sent it back anyway. I read countless posts on the logitech forum from people who have the same problems, i read one review from a pro computer geek who highly recommends the squeezebox but he also admits if you are not very familiar with router configurations and more or less a computer tech this might be a good product to stay away from. The squeezebox has one other minor problem, the stand for the controller that charges the battery doesn't work properly , after reading through the forum I found out though there is an easy fix for that 2 small strips of electrical tape inside the charger on the back side will fix that.Logitech customer support fix for that problem was to send me a new batty, of course that didn't fix the problem.I do have a recommendation if you are only trying to stream you music from you wireless network to your sound system, i have a roku netflix player that thing is so easy to use and doesn't have any of those problems, the sound quality of the squeezebox might be a bit better. It has a feature, MP3 player , where you can play your entire itunes collection on your sound system and has a digital connection to your sound system. The drawback is it does not work with rhapsody. There seem to be very few good choices for a dependable rhapsody player, I really think the only one might be the sonos player, that's the one that I will try next

Its a very product. Logitech makes good products. From the time you open the box and set the whole thing up maybe about 2o minutes tops. Very easy to setup and start enjoying your music. Great product!
